If your alternative is Sky Muster, congested fixed wireless, or a mobile hotspot balanced on a windowsill, Starlink is worth it comfortably. If you can get fixed-line NBN, it is not.
Satellite internet used to mean accepting a worse connection because there was no other option. That is what changed, and it is why the download speed figures below are worth checking against what you have now rather than against a city fibre plan.
That much every review agrees on. The problem is that almost every one of them does the sums with the wrong numbers.
The prices most answers are using are wrong
Google’s AI Overview for this question, checked on 9 September 2026, says the hardware is $549 to $599 and Residential plans run $99 to $139 a month.

Run the year-one number both ways and the gap is the whole argument:
- On the widely quoted figures: $574 hardware plus 12 months at $119 comes to roughly $2,000.
- On the real ones: a Starlink Mini at $287 plus 12 months of Residential 100 at $75 comes to $1,188.
That is a difference of about $800 in the first year, on the exact question of whether the thing is worth the money. A verdict computed on the first set of numbers is answering a question nobody is being asked.

What we actually measure
We hire Starlink Mini kits across Western Australia, so kits come back and we hear how they went. This is a small operation, not a lab, and I would rather give you 2 dated readings than a confident average over a sample I cannot show you.
Esperance, summer 2025-26: 180 Mbps down. 4K streaming of an evening, voice calls during the day.
Exmouth, July 2026: 175 Mbps down. Same pattern, and the hirer reported no drop-outs across the trip.
Across the fleet generally, the range we see is 100 to 200 Mbps down, 10 to 20 Mbps up, and 20 to 40 ms latency. Setup is typically under 5 minutes with the kickstand.
For context, the ACCC’s independent testing measured 230.4 Mbps across all hours on Residential Max services, so our Mini kits sitting on the ground at campsites land within about 25% of roof-mounted hardware on the top home plan. The detail is on our Starlink speeds page.
What it is genuinely bad at
4 things cause most of the disappointment, and weather is not the first of them. A review that only lists strengths is an advertisement, so these are in the order we actually see them.
Obstructions beat everything else. A single overhanging branch will cut throughput, and swaying branches cause the intermittent drop-outs that are hardest to diagnose. This is the number one cause of a disappointing setup and it has nothing to do with the plan or the hardware.
The evening slowdown is real. The ACCC measured it at about 14%, from 230.4 Mbps across all hours down to 199.1 Mbps between 7pm and 11pm. Noticeable on a speed test, rarely noticeable while watching something.
Brief dropouts are normal. The ACCC found 62.7% of Starlink units had an outage at most every other day. Before that alarms you, 71.7% of those outages lasted under a minute. Irritating mid-sentence on a call, invisible while streaming.
Power draw rules out some setups. A Standard kit pulls 75 to 100 W and needs mains or an inverter. A Mini pulls 25 to 40 W and runs off 12V directly. On a modest camper battery that difference decides the answer, as we set out in Mini vs Standard.
The cheap plans are capped. On Residential 100 at $75 you get 100 Mbps, full stop, no matter how good your sky view is. Reviews quoting 200-plus speeds are describing a more expensive plan than the one they just called cheap.
What you need for it to work
Starlink needs 3 things before it works, and only 1 of them costs money. Worth-it answers usually skip these preconditions, which is why people buy and then get disappointed.
A clear view of the sky. This is the real requirement and it is not negotiable. The dish is an electronic phased array with a 110 degree field of view, and it needs that cone unobstructed. Trees are the usual culprit, and a branch that only clips the edge is worse than an obvious blockage because the drop-outs are intermittent and you will blame the weather.
Check it before you commit to a mounting spot. The Starlink app has an obstruction tool that uses your phone camera to scan the sky and shows you exactly where the signal is being blocked. It takes about 2 minutes and it is the single most useful thing you can do before drilling anything.
Power you can supply. A Standard kit draws 75 to 100 W continuously and needs mains or an inverter. A Mini draws 25 to 40 W and takes 12 to 48 V DC directly. For a house neither matters. For a camper running off a battery, that difference decides which unit you can own.
Somewhere to put it. Both units ship with a kickstand and both can be permanently mounted. Roof and pole mounts are sold separately and are cheaper at Bunnings than as freight from Starlink, which we cover on our where to buy Starlink page.
Nothing else is required. There is no installer visit, no contract, no line to the property. Setup is genuinely under 5 minutes on the kickstand, which nobody believes until they do it.
The data question, which usually gets skipped
Every current Starlink Residential plan includes unlimited data. For a lot of households in remote areas that decides the answer more than speed does, because the thing they are escaping is a cap.
Every current Residential plan includes unlimited data with no excess charges and no lock-in contract. That is a real change from what regional Australia is used to. Sky Muster Plus has historically metered certain traffic, and mobile broadband plans meter everything, so a household that has spent years rationing video calls and software updates is buying something different in kind, not just something faster.
Roam is where the caps live. Roam 100GB at $85 gives you 100GB at full speed and then unlimited data at a reduced speed, which is fine for maps and messages and not fine for streaming. Roam Unlimited at $210 removes that. If you are choosing on price and you stream in the evenings, 100GB disappears faster than you expect.
So the honest framing is that Starlink sells unlimited data at a fixed address, and metered-then-throttled data on the move unless you pay for the top tier. Our Starlink plans page has what each tier caps.
Who it is worth it for
Starlink suits 3 of the 5 situations below and is the wrong buy in the other 2.
A rural or regional household with no fixed-line option. Yes, and it is not close. Sky Muster’s geostationary satellites sit about 36,000 km up, which is why the ACCC measured its latency at 664.9 ms against Starlink’s 29.8 ms. That is not a better version of the same thing, it is a different category of connection.
Someone on congested fixed wireless. Usually yes, though the ACCC’s own comparison found NBN fixed wireless competitive on raw speed and better on packet loss. Worth checking what you can get at your address before you switch.
A full-time traveller or van-lifer. Yes, if you are out often enough. Roam Unlimited at $210 a month is a real cost, and Standby mode between trips is what makes it sensible for someone away 6 weeks a year rather than 52.
A metro household with the NBN available. No. Starlink is more expensive and slower than fibre, and nobody at Starlink pretends otherwise.
Someone taking one trip. Probably not worth buying. A kit plus a month of service to answer a question you can answer with a fortnight’s hire is a lot of money, which is the honest version of what we sell.

Hiring makes sense in exactly 3 situations: you are going once, you are not sure satellite suits how you travel, or you need it inside a week and do not want to wait on freight. Everything else, buy it.
Questions people actually ask
Is Starlink actually good in Australia? Yes, on the measures that matter outside the cities. Our kits read 100 to 200 Mbps across regional WA, and independent ACCC testing puts national averages higher again on the uncapped plan.
What is the downside of Starlink? Obstructions, a 14% evening slowdown, sub-minute dropouts every couple of days, and plan caps on the cheaper tiers. Not weather, which is overstated in most reviews.
Is Starlink fast enough for Netflix? Yes, including 4K, on every current plan. Netflix rates 4K at about 15 Mbps.
Is Starlink cheaper than Telstra? Direct, yes. Telstra resells Starlink at $125 a month, going to $150 from 29 September 2026, against $75 direct on the entry plan.
Is Starlink worth it if I already have the NBN? Only if your NBN is satellite or badly congested fixed wireless. If it is fixed-line, no.
How long does setup take? Typically under 5 minutes on the kickstand. Roof mounting is the part worth paying someone for.
The short answer
Starlink is worth it at $75 a month if your alternative is bad or nonexistent, which describes most of regional Australia. It is not worth it if you can get fibre.
